When should my child begin piano lessons? : The World According to Ms. Alison

When should my child begin piano lessons?

by Alison Lund on 02/22/12

The majority of students start piano study between the ages of 6 and 10, which coincides with their physical development and classroom experiences.  Your child is ready to begin when he or she:

  • Has a genuine desire to learn piano.
  • Is able to read and follow simple written directions, independently.
  • Has enough time in their schedule to practice at least 5 days per week.
  • Is ready to begin to take responsibility for their own learning process.
  • The heart of an effective private lesson is the uniquely collaborative relationship between student and teacher.  Your child needs to be ready to participate with confidence and respect.
  • Ideally, can keep a steady beat, knows left from right, and is able to sing on pitch.

The genuine desire to learn the piano unfortunately doesn't equal with the genuine desire to practice. Also, i agree with the 5-day practice routine, but for how long each day? (I guess it depends on the ultimate goal, right? (see Tiger mom)

Someone actually read my blog!! Awesome! How long to practice? Determined by goals set for the week. Set the goal high enough and time will take care of itself. Goal-oriented practice also more flexible and realistic given fluctuations in intensity of other endeavours (you know, like winning chess championships :) Desire to practice....is contingent upon nature of prior practicing experience...so yes, it can be an endless vortex of pain...or exponentially constructive each time around :)
